The tonfa was originally a Japanese martial arts weapon that has since been adapted to a duty similar to the nightstick. Commonly carried by police officers, the tonfa has seen a number of "modernizing" adaptations. The simplest modern tonfa are still a lacquered stout wooden club with a rubberized handle, balanced for close-combat. Others have an alloy or polymer body, depending on intended (non)lethality. Concealable, collapsible alloy models are also available (shown). Yet others include taser technology, see Stun Baton entry, below.

Forearm Blades
Securetech presents their new line of forearm blades that give you greater control via the retractable grip. Blade and grip retract along the bottom of the arm when not in use. The single, longer blade does slightly more damage and has less risk of breaking off during an attack than comparable forearm snap blades.

The machete is another common utilitarian weapon for slashing and chopping through underbrush. Modern machetes are constructed from a durable steel alloy. Many models are also anodized with a matte finish (+15nĄ). This is a common improvised weapons for Nomads.

Monoswords
Ares Monosword
Ares Monosword
The monosword applies orbital monocrystalline ceramic technology to a full-sized sword. Kendachi markets a two-sword set (daisho) of a monoblade wakizashi and katana. Ares makes several single-hand eastern and western style monoswords. For a small fee a small diode laser can be implanted in the hilt to shine up the length of the blade. This has no effect on the use of the sword except to make the blade glow the color of the laser diode. A popular accessory among gangers and 20th century sci-fi fans.

Vibroblades vibrate a serrated monocrystaline blade at rates of more than 200 times a second giving the blade a microscopic sawing action across its entire length. This allows the blade to slice through most objects like a hot knife through butter. The vibration creates an audible hum when activated. Batteries are stored in the hilt of the weapon and battery life is typically in the range of 2 hours, with a 1 hour recharge rate. Extra batteries can be purchased for 25 nĄ, but some enterprising users plug in their weapon to larger battery packs worn on the body. In general, every 0.5 lbs of extra battery gives the weapon 2 hours of activation time.

The Ares Vibrosword & Vibroknife are sleek, modern designs with a straight blade and a round, katana style hilt that contains the battery with a semi-circular hand guard with short, abbreviated crosspieces for ease of use in an urban environment. The pommel of the hilt contains the recharge socket for the batteries within. As with the monoswords, a small diode laser can be implanted in the hilt of the vibrosword to shine up the length of the blade, making the blade glow the color of the laser diode.

Vibroblades are still somewhat on the fragile side. On a roll of all 1s, roll 1d6. If the roll is less than 3 then the weapon shuts down and can be used as a regular sword. If the roll is a 1, the blade shatters and the weapon is damaged beyond repair.

This weapon was designed for use against Awakened creatures by Centurion Industries and features a lightweight crescent-shaped axe-head to prevent snagging. A pair of welding lasers mounted on either side of the blade are focused just past teh blade's edge, matching its crescent shape and improving the blade's efficiency by weakening the structure of whatever the axe hits.

While the Centurion axe is smaller than other axes - allowing one-handed use - the lasers are easily knocked out of alignment by the traditional thumping chop common to a two-handed axe. The batteries for the lasers last 2 hours and require 1 hour to recharge.

Perfect for those discrete places that let you carry in a knife but not a gun, the Barrage packs four times the punch of its predecessors with the ability to fire all four barrels simultaneously.

A four barrel burst does 8M damage with a -3 penalty from recoil and takes a simple action to toggle select. The firer suffers a -1 penalty to aim due to the unusual configuration of the weapon and lack of any sighting devices. The weapon itself is heavy, and suffers from a -1 penalty use in melee. On a successful hit with the blade, the barrels can be discharged at point blank range, automatically hitting.

Mallorean Arms Gunblade

The BladeGun is a semi-automatic heavy pistol with a large crescent shaped knife-blade attached in front of the trigger guard and grip. Also called the Samurai handgun, it incorporates styling found on the grips of katanas and Japanese kanji down the side of the slide and blade.

This pistol can accept only top and barrel mounts, the underbarrel mount taken up by the blade. The underbarrel weight of the blade gives the gun 1 point of recoil compensation.

Around 1900 a gang of Parisian criminals called themselves Apaches after the warlike tribe of Native American Indians. The gang used specially made pinfire revolvers that had folding blades and knuckle dusters. There is no barrel on this gun, it must be fired at point blank range. The blade runs under where the barrel of the gun would be. The knuckle dusters act as a folding grip. If a wound with the knife inflicts an S wound the gun may be fired as a free action. While using the brass knuckles (because of the way they must be folded to use them) the gun canot be fired but the knife may be used. While using the gun and knife the knuckle dusters may not be used, because they are acting as a grip. Cannot mount any accessories.

The Gun-Sword is a heavy caliber revolver mated to a long mono-broadsword. The weapon makes an effective, if heavy, one-handed broadsword. As a revolver, it is a little more difficult to use, with a +1 TN penalty for the weight of the blade and a minimum strength 4 requirement (an additional -2 TN modifier if below STR 4).

Combat Axe
The Wallacher Combat Ax is typical of the modern street-warfare battleax. Utilizing a lightweight alloy handle coupled with a dual-alloy composite blade: a durable steel alloy comprises the bulk of the axe-head, while a tungsten carbide cermet is used for the edge. Additionally, the Wallacher Combat Ax has a small stud that when pressed, releases a 10cm thrusting spike from the "business end" of the haft! (Thrusting spike does (STR)L damage and is *concealability 12 within the weapon).

The halberd is a hefty polearm with a heavy cleaving head on the end, giving both reach and powerful chopping attacks. In addition most halberds are fitted with a spear tip for thrusting attacks and a hook which originally was designed to pull riders off horses. Gangers have found that it works just as well against riders on motorcycles, making this unusual weapon a new Sprawl favorite.

Trident
A trident is a spear-like weapon with three points for a head. The three points allow an opponent that is successfully attacked with the trident to be pinned against either a wall or the ground. The three points also prevent the trident from penetrating too deeply to be drawn out again, although some tridents have barbed heads to make them more difficult to withdraw.

This is a close-combat weapon designed especially for full 'borgs and Trolls. It is a heavy, solid-tungsten sledgehammer designed with ergonomic combat grips, spiked knuckle guards and a thumb switch-activated rocket booster built into the back of the hammer's head. When fired, the rockets blast the hammer around at near-supersonic speed, delivering unheard-of wound potential.

One-half Impact armor is used to resist the blow and the rocket-assisted blow counts as Anti-Vehicular per standard SR3 rules. The Hyper-Hammer may be used two times before needing to be refueled (with jet fuel). The handle and grips can be folded down, so that a large person could conceal the Hyper-Hammer under a trenchcoat -- this is made easier by the use of a special shoulder rig, available from SlamDance, Inc. for 40Ą (adds +1 to the weapon’s Concealability).

Chain Sword
An unusual weapon, the Chain Sword can be used as both an edged weapon and a whip-like chain weapon. The chain sword consists of a number of short bladed segments strung together along a strong chain and connected by wires. The segments are constructed to fit together tightly like jig-saw pieces.

Cyber whip
The cyberwhip incorporates the same myomer technology used to operate cyberlimbs into a smartlink controlled whip. The myomer strands surround a wire core and are in turn sheathed in an insulating layer of plastic and then a layer of metal-plated kevlar. Under smartlink guidance, the myomer causes a section of the whip to stiffen just before impact, greatly increasing the bludgeoning damage. The myomer can also be directed to lock a section of the whip that has been wrapped about an object as well as a limited weak prehensile ability (not strong enough to independently lift objects). Smartwhips contain a taser module in their grip that can be activated to send a powerful shock along the outside of the kevlar sheath to increase the stunning abilities of this weapon.

Kusarigama
The kusarigama is a japanese weapon consisting of a sickle or warpick with a long weighted chain attached to its haft. Originally an improvised peasant weapon, the Japanese 'ninja' long were rumored to use this weapon very effectively to entangle or strangle an opponent with the chain, pummel with the weight, and slice with the sickle.

Popularized by the ninja flicks cranked out since the 20th century, the Nunchaku consists of two wood or metal rods connected by a short length of chain and is a modern weapon often mistakenly said to be derived from Okinawan rice threshers.

The western flail is a similar weapon that was actually derived from a peasants wheat thresher. Traditionally, footman flails had a longer haft and either one or a series of shorter rods attached by chains to the longer staff-like haft. Modern flails consist of equal length metal rods.

Shock Gloves
The Stun Glove is a non-lethal weapon that has gained substantial popularity with police and security units worldwide. The Glove consists of an electrical insulating polymer mesh glove with a number of electrical contact "studs" on the knuckles and palm, connected to a "bracer" of embedded rechargeable powercells.

Stun Staff
The same taser technology incorporated in stun batons is also available in polearm form. The stun staff is a wielded similar to a spear, but requires only a touch of the tip of the staff to incapacitate an opponent. The stun staff can adjust the shock from 100-350kV. The higher settings can cause death in weak or older individuals.

Handheld taser devices have been popular for decades as a concealable, nonlethal self-defense weapon. The weapon itself does no additional physical damage, but the electrical shock on contact with the prongs can be devestating! As with the other Stun weapons, Tasers are adustable from typically 10-200kV discharges. The power pack has 30 "charges", that are drained a number equal to the Intensity setting on each use. See Stun Baton entry for details on handling the electrical attack. Most are small enough to fit in a small purse or large pocket. Additionally, an electrical arc can be generated across a secondary set of "dummy" contacts for intimidation purposes (potential bonus to Intimidation rolls). The Intimidation setting uses 1 charge per turn.
Other varieties of tasers utilize gas-propelled wire-trailing darts to carry the discharge to the opponent at range. These so-called "Air tasers" utilize a compressed air canister (good for 30 shots, $5) and an internal battery (good for 30 points of Intensity, $10). Most have a pepperbox configuration, with anywhere from 1-6 sets of darts available. Disposable "clips" of darts cost $2/rd. Darts limited by wire-spool length of 20m (ie Maximum Range is 20m).
