Space and science fiction have been interlinked for longer than the term 'science fiction' has existed. (Vera Historia written in 160 AD has a whirlwind transporting a ship sailing beyond the Pillars of Hercules to the Moon, where the voyagers find the King is about to go to war with the Emperor of the Sun over rights to colonize Venus). During the space race and early space program, movies treated space like the exotic and dangerous local it was with movies like 2001 a Space Odessey. Movies like Star Wars changed all that, making it possible for characters to fly around space like people today fly around the world.

In the process of inventing artificial gravity and faster-than-light travel, space fiction on the screen lost a little of its exotic frontier nature and danger. Venus Rises stands poised to change all of that. The characters of Venus Rises are like oil-rig workers and Alaskian crab fishermen braving the dangers of space to make an everyday living.
